Sicily's capital Palermo has a lot to offer in terms of cultural history. The old town with its beautiful squares, winding alleyways and majestic cathedrals is more than 2,800 years old and represents all the advantages of an atmospheric Mediterranean city. If you don't want to spend the night directly in the capital, you will find an exquisite place to relax south of Palermo in Castelvetrano with the stylish country villa Plumbago - surrounded by palm and citrus trees.

However, one of the most beautiful places for visitors in Sicily is Taormina. The idyllic village is located on the other edge of the island, on the north-east coast with a view of Mount Etna. A cable car leads to the historic old town, which is definitely worth a visit. Here you can visit the second largest ancient theatre in Sicily. The theatre is almost completely preserved. From there you also have a wonderful view of Mount Etna and the municipality of Giardini-Naxos. For many travellers, however, the highlight of a visit to Taormina is walking over to Isola Bella off the coast. The beautiful island has been a nature reserve since 1998 and rightly bears its name. The island, which is connected to the mainland by a strip of sand, is home to numerous exotic plants and probably the most beautiful beach in Taormina. Rent the comfortable Villa Antika in Sicily's Taormina, for example, and save yourself a long journey.

Incidentally, fans of "The Godfather" will get their delight nearby: the two small towns of Forza d'Agrò and Savoca were the locations for the shooting of this film classical.

Another highlight is the coastal town of Syracuse. Its charming old town on the island of Ortigia is perfect for a stroll through the city. You can find everything a connoisseur's heart desires in the numerous small speciality shops and boutiques. Feel the tranquillity of the historic town without the noise of traffic, as cars are banned on the island. Admire the ancient Temple of Apollo at the entrance to Ortigia, visit the colourful market with delicatessen sandwich restaurants at the end in Syracuse and stroll through the lively harbour. The perfect accommodation for your stay there is Villa Diamante with its private beach and other highlights, located in Plemmirio, just a few kilometres from Syracuse. The spacious property is set on 1 hectare of land, from where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the Mediterranean.

50 kilometres south of Syracuse lies the picturesque fishing village of Marzamemi. Many of our customers who rent a villa in Sicily take the opportunity to stay in the "enchanted village", as Marzamemi is affectionately known, which is idyllically situated on the Ionian Sea. The fishing harbour and the old town with its narrow alleyways and picturesque sandstone houses invite you to linger and show Sicily from its original side. You should definitely savour one of the excellent fish dishes here in the former tuna mecca.

You can experience an extraordinary spectacle on a visit to Mount Etna. The still active volcano offers a very special atmosphere. Since 1987, the 58,000 hectare area around the volcano has been a nature and regional park. Here you can hike through extensive olive, pistachio and orange tree forests. Guided tours of the active volcano are also possible. A cable car takes you from 2000 metres above sea level to around 2500 metres above sea level. However, tours to the active volcano should only be undertaken under supervision, as the risk of an accident is otherwise too great.

Climate and best travel period

It is not for nothing that Sicily is also known as the sunny island. In the summer months of July to August, the island is often spoilt with up to eleven hours of sunshine a day thanks to the Mediterranean climate. Just the thing for sun lovers. You can expect temperatures of around 40 degrees Celsius. If you are looking to cool off in the meantime, spend some time relaxing in the pool of your fully equipped villa for rent in Sicily or enjoy the comfort of the villa's own air conditioning.

Sicily is not only an attractive destination for visitors in the very hot high season. If you are planning a spontaneous trip to the south in the low season, you can still lie on the beach or swim in the sea in good weather on the island in September or October. We even recommend that you avoid the peak season in July and August and instead spend your beach holiday either between April and June or between September and November. The slightly more moderate temperatures are particularly preferable if you want to enjoy not only a beach holiday but also activities such as excursions.

Winter, on the other hand, is wetter and significantly cooler at around 10-15 °C. But if you rent a villa in Sicily now, you can assume that there are fewer tourists and the attractions are emptier. Perfect for an extensive city trip.

Entertainment & Nightlife

You will find an evening entertainment programme and cultural events in every major town in Sicily. In the evenings, tourist centres in particular offer a variety of bars, restaurants, clubs and open-air events. Depending on where you have rented a villa in Sicily, you can enjoy a lively nightlife in Catania, Messina, Palermo, Syracuse, Toarmina or Marsala. Whether you are looking for cocktails, small delicacies, perfect wines or musical entertainment, Sicily in the evening/at night is a must.

After an exciting night, return to your holiday accommodation Villa Aranjaya near Catania in search of peace and seclusion, for example, a manor house equipped with all amenities in the middle of a unique orange plantation.

Eat & Drink

What would a holiday in Sicily be without tasty Italian food? There are plenty of good restaurants in Sicily. Pasta and pizza are very popular here. Sicilian cuisine is also strongly characterised by fish and seafood. Tuna in particular is typical of the island's cuisine, as it has been caught locally for centuries and prepared fresh.

Pistachio dishes, such as crema di pasticchio, a sweet dessert cream, are also traditional. Pistachios are grown in many places in Sicily, which is why they are one of the national dishes. The same applies to lemons and oranges. Locally harvested fruit is therefore often used in Sicilian cuisine.

A no-go in Sicily is to order only one course in a restaurant; this is only acceptable in pizzerias. A real Sicilian meal, where the waiter serves one delicious starter after another and pasta and fish are followed by a meat course and dessert, should not be missed.

Another absolute must are the Sicilian arancini, sweet, deep-fried rice balls, which are usually served as a starter. We also recommend cannolli as a dessert or pastry to accompany your coffee. These pastry rolls filled with ricotta and other sweet ingredients are a Sicilian speciality known the world over. They go best with a Sicilian wine.

Anreise

Sicily has three international airports. Most visitors land in Sicily via Punta Raisi in Palermo, Catania-Fontanarossa or Vincenzo Florio Airport near Trapani. Alternatively, the island can also be reached by car ferry. The largest ferry harbour is in Messina. This is why Messina is also known as the gateway to Sicily. The city was almost completely destroyed more than 100 years ago, but the city's spectacular cathedral has been preserved to this day. If you decide to travel by ferry, we advise you to interrupt your journey for a stopover in Messina.

Our concierge service will also be happy to organise a private flight to Sicily for an exclusive and particularly comfortable arrival. Hire a private jet to your villa and fly to your holiday destination in style.

If you have any questions about accommodation or places of interest in Sicily, please get in touch with us. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Of course, we will also be happy to advise you on other destinations. How about a trip to Croatia, also located on the Mediterranean? Or what do you think of an exclusive holiday in Greece?
