The small village of Porto Rafael was founded in 1960, when Rafael Neville, Count of Berlanga y del Duero, bought a piece of land here and launched the first tourist initiative in Gallura. It still bears the name "Porto Rafael" and its coat of arms, which reads: "To dream is to live".
