Venice Info | POI Photographed countless times, a backdrop for hundreds of films and one of the most beautiful ensembles of architecture worldwide: you simply have to explore the centre of Venice with its towering Campanile of San Marco yourself. You have a marvelous view of the lagoon, the city and St. Mark's Square with its many pigeons from the tower, which is part of the scenery in the magical triangle between the former secular centre of power, Doges Palace, and the splendid Basilica di San Marco.
This unique world heritage city is constructed on approximately 140 islands with 160 canals spanned by 400 bridges. The best known among them is the Rialto Bridge over the Canal Grande. On the largest of the many waterways of Venice, a ride in a gondola past the splendid "palazzi" is just as obligatory as a visit to the Scuola Grande di San Rocco with the most important works of Tintoretto on its walls and ceiling. Also not to be missed is a tour of Santi Giovanni e Paolo, the largest gothic secular building in Venice as well as ...; the list of unique highlights in the city on the lagoon is long.
But Venice is not only composed of superlatives from the past. Events such as Biennale, Carnevale and simply everyday life in the alleyways of the city create a bridge to the present. You can experience this in an especially authentic manner at the turbulent Mercato di Rialto if you mingle with Venetians buying fruit, vegetables and fish. Local tourist informationAPT Venezia

http://www.turismovenezia.it Getting aroundYou can best soak up the refined beauty of the city on the lagoon during a romantic walk - this is also the cheapest option. One tour starts at St. Mark's Square and, hence, with the concentrated splendour of Venice, past picturesque terraces of cafés and through countless pigeons to the Palazzo Ducale, the jewel among the Venetian gothic buildings, and the Basilica di San Marco with its famous altar crest (Pala d'Oro) promise breath-taking impressions. There is also a panoramic view from the world-famous 98 m high Campanile.
Proceeding in the direction of Rialto, your walk takes you through the Torre dell' Orologio, the clock tower with its bronze Moors, to the Merceria dell'Orologio. Filled with exclusive shops, you will find it hard to resist the temptations of the latest fashion trends in this shopping arcade. You then come to the famous Ponte Rialto. To the right after the bridge, souvenir fans will be in their element, as you can find all kinds of Venetian knick-knacks in Sotoportego dell'Acque. Entertainment & NightlifeThis is not exactly a party city, especially with respect to clubs and pubs. Vivaldi's birthplace prefers entertainment of the refined type. For example, the extensive concert programme in summer with the focus on classical music is a real treat - some of the performances are held in the breathtaking ambience of Venetian palaces and churches. There is no lack of theatres for plays either in Venice - the performances at the Gran Teatro La Fenice with international artists are a guaranteed highlight. Food & DrinkIn this city situated on a lagoon, seafood lovers will find lots of culinary delights - delicacies from the sea play an important role in the simple but good Venetian cuisine. Typical specialties include "baccalà mantecato", stockfish puree, "granzeola", spiny crabmeat with oil and lemon, or "risotto nero", a dark black rice dish coloured with squid ink. To accompany the food we recommend wines from the region such as pino bianco, tocai (white), raboso, refosco (rot) and a sparkling glass of prosecco or "Spritz", made of campari, white wine and mineral water, as an aperitif.
Traditional dishes at more or less reasonable prices are really only available in trattoria which are off the beaten tourist track. Self-service restaurants, rosticceria, also provide a small insight into local cuisine and give you satisfactory value for your money. You should avoid the so-called tourist menus because they are usually of poor quality, very expensive and usually have nothing to do with Venetian cuisine. Smoking has been strictly prohibited in cafés, bars and restaurants since January 2005. ShoppingVenice not only has unique architecture, but also exquisite souvenirs: fantastic lace from Burano, unique carnival masks and excellent masterpieces made of glass, which are produced employing an old tradition in the glass-blowing workshops on the island of Murano. If you want to experience the genuine flair of the city on the lagoon close up you should not miss the city's wonderful and oldest fruit, vegetable and fish market near the Rialto Bridge. Brand piracy is forbidden in Italy. Even if you buy or accept products which are clearly pirated copies of a brand or design, you risks a fine of up to 10,000 euros. The pirated goods are also confiscated. How to get thereVenice’s airport Marco Polo is the hub for European flights (http://www.veniceairport.it). It is even connected by a land route with the center of Venice (Piazzale Roma). Buses are available, which bring you to your destination. Low-cost airlines usually arrive at Treviso Airport (http://www.trevisoairport.it). Venice can be reached with the ATVO bus (http://www.atvo.it). How to get thereThe most romantic way to reach the City of Water is by sea, e.g. from Jesolo or Caorle. Since neither ships nor smaller boats can dock in front of each hotel, a trolley case is recommended for the footpath, which often leads over several bridges. The terminal for passenger ferries, hovercrafts and cruise liners is west of the city center (http://www.vtp.it). Festivities & EventsJanuary Epiphany is celebrated on January 6. Highlights are the impressive bonfires, which are lit on this day.
February / March On Carnevale (the five days preceding Ash Wednesday), Venice is turned into a huge masked ball. Allow yourself to be enchanted by the people behind the elaborate Venetian masks and costumes (http://www.carnevale.venezia.it).
April 25 The Festa di San Marco is celebrated boisterously on St. Mark’s square. Men should not forget to give a rose to their sweethearts on this day.
September On the first Sunday of the month, the Regata storica takes locals and tourists back into former times. Historical boats can be admired on the Canal Grande. The winner of the regatta is celebrated as the hero of the year. Climate and travel seasonJuly and August are the warmest months with temperatures of about 73 °F (23 °C). The thermometers at the Venetian Lido often indicate temperatures of about 86 °F (30 °C). Anyone who flinches away from mass tourism should arrive in October when the temperatures are still pleasantly warm. With 37 °F (3 °C) on average, January is the coldest month. The most precipitation falls in November. ProfileOfficial language: Italian
