Tyrol

Info | POI
Francois SchnellThe mountain is calling! In the country of mountains, amidst the Austrian Alps, you are surrouned by dreamlike, natural landscapes. On the one side high, sheer rock walls rise towards the sky, their peaks covered in snow almost all year round, on the other side unfurl fertile, lush Alpine meadows, traversed by fresh, clear mountain streams. This wonderful rural environment, the relaxing tranquility of the mountains, and superb hospitality of the locals represent Tyrol like almost no other vacation destination. This place is still a pure idyll, never appearing to be fake. Not for nothing is the Austrian region a popular travel destination among nature and hiking enthusiasts, relaxation seekers, but also among sport freaks. Tyrol is, due to its diversity and adjustment to every season, worth a visit for all types of vacations. During the winter fast ski slopes draw in the skiiers, in summer the fresh lakes attract tourists, and in spring and fall hikers, and cyclists enjoy the beauty of the region.

How to get there

In order to get from Germany to Tyrol by car, you can take the A 93 and subsequently the Austrian A 13. The Italian A 22 connecting to the Austrian A 13 takes you from southern Europe to Innsbruck. A tip for every motorist is to remember to purchase the motorway permit sticker (Vignette), otherwise the drive could prove costly. This permit can be obtained at boarder crossings or those gas stations near the boarder areas.

Food & Drink

Dining in the Alpines can be a special experience. Traveling by foot or bike along 18 different routes of dining pleasure, vacationers can discover a diverse variety of Tyrolean specialties in their towns of origin (for example, mountain lamb from east Tyrol, Paznaun alpine cheese, and Brandenberger “Prügeltorte” which is a layer cake specialty). In those towns of origin one cannot only see how these delicacies are made, but also relish the consumption of them in the adjoining restaurants. Whoever wishes not to go on hiking tours can settle down in an traditional inn. Here regional dishes are served in a quaint atmosphere. Among those dishes are a dumpling soup, “Moosbeernocken” which is a mini pancake made with wild mountain blueberries, sweet doughnuts (Krapfen) and an edelweiss white sausage which rivals the Bavarian version.

Festivities & Events

February/March"Fasching" or carnival is exhaustively celebrated in Tyrol in February or March. During these days, winter is banished and spring is summoned. After the fantastic days of celebrating, the traditional bonfires in Pinswang bring the jesting to an end. June 21st Solstice fire: In several towns, among them Söll and Kirchdorf, the first day of summer is welcomed with bonfires. July Erl Festival: Every year the beautiful Alpine region is the backdrop for the international Opera world at the Tyrolean Festival. The Innsbruck Promenaden Concerts: A special highlight of the Promenaden Concert can be found in the inner courtyard of the imperial Hofburg. Among other things, important works by famous composers are interpreted by modern wind ensembles in new and refreshing ways. October Chestnuts, wine and music ("Kestn, Wein und Musik"): Every year this popular festival can be enjoyed in the Museum Tiroler Bauerhöfe in Kramsach. Starting at one o'clock in the afternoon there is dancing, good spirits and an abundance of feasting. December Krampusrummel: Christmas celebration with nativity plays.

Climate and travel season

A snowy winter setting, balmy springs and hot summers make Tyrol a popular travel destination all year round. The ideal time to travel to Tyrol depends more on the individual vacation plans. Winter sports enthusiast will take advantage of the ideal snow conditions in the Alps, spring will better suit hikers and nature lovers, who will enjoy the beautiful blossoms of fruit trees beginning around the middle of April, and sun worshippers will feel most at home in July and August. Only November reveals itself to be very rainy and unpleasant. For those who want to spend warm summer days hiking should not go without taking a jacket along.

Entertainment & Nightlife

In this idylic alpine region boredom is an alien concept. Many sport and leisure activities guarantee that any vacationer, pleasantly tired from a busy day, will be ready for a good night's sleep. Most notably, the outdoor activites in a beautiful mountain setting are most popular. In winter you can ride the slopes and in summer thoroughly enjoy the healthy mountain air while bike riding or hiking. For those who have enough power to party at the end of the day will enjoy themselves especially in larger cities like Innsbruck. From discos in metropolitan areas to trendy cocktail bars and rustic taverns and pubs featuring live music there is something to everyones liking. Moreover in winter the alpine huts' attraction is the après-ski party, where alcohol flows freely.

Shopping

Souvenirs help preserve the memories of a great vacation. Tacky replicas of places and things of interest are quickly purchased when nothing else can be found. Much more interesting than cheap copies are genuine, regional products. Tyrol has much to offer in this area. Whether it is Austrian country-house décor, hand-made pastries and dumplings, "Toggln" or Tyrolean loden, the list of typical products from this favourite vacation destination is long and diverse. One can buy most of these objects directly from the manufacturer. This is especially worth it to see where culinary delicacies such as Tyrolean cheese come from. Of course Tyrol has lively towns, where boutiques offer fashion and big department store chains offer everything from apples to zippers. Equally, bigger cities like Innsbruck have modern malls offering abundent shopping opprtunities.

Getting around

The excellent roads and highways make the trip by car especially comfortable. Likewise daily rail service from town to town is comfortable and convenient. The public transportation system VVT (Verkehrsverbund Tirol), including city buses, which are most suitable for exploring the beautiful surroundings and especially the city center, is very efficient. Those who are in good shape, should enjoy the breathless natural scenery on a hiking tour. An extensive hike over hills and valleys will allow you to especially enjoy the fresh alpine air and scenic countryside. Bike riding is also a good alternative for getting around. Excellent bike paths also provide the necessary safety when riding in traffic.
